(June 25, 2018) Associate Professor Dr. Zhenyu “James” Kong has been selected to participate in a U.S. Navy Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) award as part of a multi-university research team sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
(June 18, 2018) Dr. Blake Johnson earned multiple awards as well as a grant in spring 2018: College of Engineering Dean’s Awards for Excellence Outstanding New Assistant Professor award, College of Engineering Student Engineers’ Council (SEC) Undergraduate Research Advisor Award, and ICAT SEAD grant for the project with printed prosthetics.
(June 14, 2018) Assistant Professor Dr. Alejandro Salado recently received a new grant from the Naval Postgraduate School’s Acquisition Research Program. The project addresses a new approach for designing and implementing verification strategies in large-scale systems. For this competitive grant, Dr. Salado’s proposal was ranked in the top five among 86 submitted proposals.
(June 8, 2018) An educator and leader in the industrial and systems engineering field, Van Aken has been appointed head of Virginia Tech’s Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering, effective June 10, 2018.
(June 5, 2018) Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved promotions and tenure for the following ISE faculty members: Dr. Joe Gabbard was awarded tenure at his current rank of associate professor, Dr. Navid Ghaffarzadegan was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor, and Dr. Natalie Cherbaka was promoted to collegiate associate professor.
(June 1, 2018) Charles O. Gordon Professor Dr. Don Taylor is the recipient of the 2018 Albert G. Holzman Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) for significant contributions to the industrial engineering profession by an outstanding educator. The Holzman award is one of the highest honors given to a member of the IISE who has contributed significantly to the profession through research, publication, extension, administration and teaching innovation in the academic environment. In additions, he has exhibited a rare trait of superbly leading not only his research and scholarly work, but also, a department, a college, a professional organization, and now, a university in intellectual and educational pursuits.
(May 31, 2018) ISE’s Undergraduate Academic Advisor Joyce Vest was awarded the Jenny Frank Award, and Laboratory Instrument Maker Randy Waldron received the Technical Award from Virginia Tech’s College Association for Staff in Engineering (CASE) in May 2018.
(May 29, 2018) An ISE senior design project team (Team 18: Paul Hayes, Dylan Sackadorf, Micah Schumaker, and Lauren Schwartz) earned first place in the Scheduling category of the Andrew P. Sage Senior Design Capstone Competition at George Mason University on May 7, 2018.
(May 29, 2018) The winning teams of the Senior Design Awards were announced during the Senior Symposium reception. Team 40 (Matthew Boys, Rachel Carie, Kunal Gandhi) for Project Management and People's Choice awards; Team 23 (Shiv Balodi, Chelsea Galara, Daniel Safewright, Ahmed Salih) for Applications of ISE Methods & Tools award; Team 18 (Paul Hayes, Dylan Sackadorf, Micah Schumaker, Lauren Schwartz) for Innovation and Creativity award; Team 20 (Charlie Bushrow, Erik Dietrich, Colleen Ferlotti, Sam Swanson) for Performance Impact award.
(May 24, 2018) Dr. Don Taylor was honored with the Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award; Dr. Blake Johnson received the Young Investigator Award from the Manufacturing & Design division; Dr. James Kong earned the IISE Transactions Quality & Reliability Engineering Best Paper award; Class of 2018 graduate Mary Buckingham received the James Barany Award for Excellence; Class of 2018 graduate Dylan Burnette won 2nd place at the Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition; IISE scholarship or fellowship was given to Chenang Liu, Neal Roberts, Julie, Mohl, Matthew Anama.
