Dr. Ian Rehmert
VP, Head of Mortgage Underwriting, Capital One
Ian has succeeded in making an impact within a number of different organizations across the financial, defense, internet, and transportation industries. He took a position with Capital One Home Loans in 2010 to build their loss mitigation capabilities, earned accreditation as a credit officer in 2011, and transitioned from loss mitigation into the lending space in 2016. He led substantial enhancements to Capital One’s community lending strategy to start his origination experience and is now Head of Mortgage Underwriting.
During his 13-year tenure managing risk and loss mitigation efforts, Ian helped both Capital One and HSBC navigate the mortgage crisis by developing strategies, building teams, and managing operations that kept tens of thousands of customers in their homes, stabilized loan portfolio performance, and improved expected losses in excess of $2B.
From 2003 to 2010, he built and led a strategy and analysis function consisting of more than 100 analytical and technical professionals within HSBC North America. His team worked with stakeholders at all levels within Operations, Risk, and Finance to drive improvements to Consumer Loan Servicing Operations. With no precedent at the leading edge of the mortgage crisis, Ian’s team rapidly developed an innovative program to evaluate mortgage portfolios and deliver loan-level recommendations on the optimal terms for a loan modification. This program was deployed across $80B of the $110B loan portfolio under management and was featured in the July 7, 2008 issue of BusinessWeek and the October 20, 2008 issue of American Banker. This work also earned a US Patent titled "Methods and Systems for Proactive Loan Modification.
Prior to his lending roles within Capital One, Ian managed both loss mitigation operations and strategy on their home loans servicing portfolio that exceeded $60B. He not only built the loss mitigation capability within the Home Loans business, but also led the development, implementation, and execution of a robust set of loss mitigation solutions that evolved to support two major bank acquisitions and helped thousands of customers stay in their homes or avoid foreclosure. Anticipated losses were cut in half and customer-focused solutions helped to avoid material quality issues that plagued many other mortgage servicing businesses.
Ian earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech with a concentration in Operations Research. He also played intercollegiate lacrosse as a defenseman during all four years of his undergraduate study with his brother, John, by his side as a goalie in his senior year. Ian lives just north of Dallas, Texas with his wife, Katie, and their two children, Chloe and Jonathan. He enjoys spending time with family, travelling, rooting for the Hokies, going to concerts, and collecting wine.
