(May 24, 2018) Several ISE faculty and students were the recipients of prestigious honors and awards from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) at their Annual Conference and Expo this week. 

  • Charles O. Gordon Professor Dr. Don Taylor was honored with the Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award, one of the highest honors given to a member of the industrial engineering community who has made significant contributions to education.
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Blake Johnson received the Young Investigator Award from the Manufacturing & Design (M&D) Division of IISE. This nationally-competitive award was announced at the M&D Town Hall meeting and on slides at various events during the IISE Annual Conference.
  • Associate Professor Dr. James Kong earned the IISE Transactions Quality & Reliability Engineering Best Paper award with his paper, “An online sparse estimation-based classification approach for real-time monitoring in advanced manufacturing processes from heterogeneous sensor data,” which Dr. Kong co-authored with his former students.
  • Class of 2018 graduate Mary Buckingham received the James Barany Award for Excellence - only one award is given nationally each year.  Mary is the outgoing president of the VT ISE student chapter of IISE and a recipient of the VT ISE Robert D. Dryden Outstanding Senior Award.
  • Class of 2018 graduate Dylan Burnette won second place for his paper “Setup reduction application to liquid filling operations” at the Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition. He is a recipient of the VT ISE Outstanding Service Award.
  • The following ISE students have been awarded a 2018-2019 IISE scholarship or fellowship:

    • Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship for ISE rising senior Neal Roberts
    • Harold & Inge Marcus Scholarhsip for ISE rising senior Julie Mohl
