Members of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Community,

Like all of you, we are horrified and saddened by the recent violent attacks this week, which claimed the lives of six women of Asian descent.

This incident comes amidst a much broader and disturbing trend of anti-Asian racism and violence that is happening all across our country. While this anti-Asian racism in our country is not new, there has been a huge increase in violence and xenophobia since the beginning of the global pandemic.

We would like to reaffirm our support of our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander students, researchers, faculty, and staff in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. We stand with you in your sadness and alarm, not only over this recent racist attack, but with the rise of these instances.

These events reinforce our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in our department. Our strength comes from this diversity and the varied experiences and perspectives that we embrace in our community. We hope that everyone will be willing to reaffirm these ideals and will support our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander community within our department and throughout the Virginia Tech community.
