Five new staff members join ISE in summer 2018
(August 8, 2018) ISE would like to welcome five new staff members who joined the department this summer – Alumni and External Relations Manager Linda Hazelwood, Undergraduate Academic Advisor Maggie Johnson, Lab Instrument Maker Travis Lyons, Electrical and Systems Engineer Mark Montgomery, and Executive Assistant to Department Head Kathy Wilkes.
Linda Hazelwood started in the new position of Alumni and External Relations Manager in ISE. She was previously in the Engineering Education Department, serving as their Graduate Program Coordinator and Communications Manager. She will manage the external communications for ISE in support of its vision and strategic direction through oversight of the website, news stories, and social media outlets. She will also work with the Advancement team in the College of Engineering to learn all of the latest information and priorities from the university and college, and will apply this knowledge to help ISE continue alumni engagement strategies and approaches to promote the department externally.
Maggie Johnson is a new Undergraduate Academic Advisor in ISE. She recently completed her master's degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs at Virginia Tech. She also holds a graduate certificate in Educational Psychology, along with undergraduate degrees in English and Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Tech. She honed her advising skills through a graduate assistantship with VT's Student Success Center, as well as working with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department's undergraduate advising office.
Travis Lyons joined the ISE Department in the position of Lab Instrument Maker in the Harris Manufacturing Processes Lab. He comes from Moog Components Group in Blacksburg, where he had been a Class A Machinist, and has 21 years of experience. Travis is part of the excellent team in the Harris lab teaching ISE 2214 Manufacturing Processes Lab.
Mark Montgomery started his position in ISE as Electrical and Systems Engineer. He moved from the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering (AOE) Department, where he held a similar position. He also had significant teaching duties in the AOE’s instructional lab, in addition to supporting research equipment needs in the department. Prior to his 12 years in AOE, Mark also worked in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department -- thus, he has a great deal of experience within the College of Engineering supporting the research and education missions.
Kathy Wilkes is the new Executive Assistant to the Department Head in ISE. She was a Human Resources Assistant within the Biocomplexity Institute and had also served as Administrative Assistant to the department head in the Biomedical Sciences Department in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to her time at Virginia Tech, she worked at Federal Mogul and CDK Global (formerly ADP). She is originally from Arkansas but has been living in the New River Valley area for over four years.
