Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and other methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.

The Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics Center (HFEEC) at Virginia Tech uniquely covers the breadth of human factors engineering and ergonomics. The Center is comprised of a consortium of research laboratories and supporting facilities, and is a major international center of excellence for research in human factors engineering and ergonomics research, education and training.
