Detailed Information

Overview:

The Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL) is a laboratory in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Center and is dedicated to research on human factors problems associated with the design of systems involving humans and computers. Research in this lab is directed primarily to issues related to user-centered design of software interfaces between humans and computers that enhance human cognitive information processing and performance when using computer systems.

Research:

Some of the research topics investigated in the laboratory include:

  • The design of human-computer dialogues
  • Training users of computer systems
  • Design and evaluation of speech input/output devices
  • The development of new methods and procedures for the design of human-computer interfaces
  • Multimedia information presentation and training
  • Designing computer interfaces for users with disabilities

Facilities:

The research space includes:

  • A sound-deadened testing room equipped with visual acuity tests, color vision tests, and an audiometer for initial screening
  • Four experimental rooms equipped with audio, video, and computer lines for the conduct of behavioral experiments and software development
  • A monitoring room for interactive experiments equipped with repeat monitors, intercoms, videotaping, and video editing

In addition, computer-generated instructional packages, on-line software metering packages, and dedicated computer connections are available for data collection and control of all computer-based experiments. The Laboratory also has direct access to the Internet. Various computer platforms and multimedia workstations are available for research and data analysis.
